ourselves + others: african feminist re-CREATIONS at SOAS, a contemporary African arts festival
On November 25, 2017, the Centre for African Studies and Ifeanyi Awachie, founder of AFRICA SALON, will present ourselves + others: african feminist re-CREATIONS at SOAS, a contemporary African arts festival.
Inspired by Nigerian scholar Obioma Nnaemeka’s theory of nego-feminism - a strand of African feminism - the festival will offer a unique mix of intellectual and performance-oriented programming. Centering women and nonbinary artists of African ascent, ourselves + others will feature cutting-edge visual art, feminist theory, creative entrepreneurship, salons, live music, an afterparty, and more. The curated art and conversations will explore feminism, silence, and the body.
Embracing nego-feminism’s strategies for representing African artists, resisting right-wing politics, and challenging monolithic views of Africa, ourselves + others is at once a timely intervention into the current political moment, an embodied exploration of critical theory, and a distinctive and decidedly contemporary new addition to London’s African festival scene.
