This August we are offering a Saturday workshop introducing the Naskh style of Calligraphy. Naskh is one of the most beautiful and popular of calligraphic styles and is commonly used for printing in Arabic.
Applicants should have some familiarity with the Arabic alphabet but it is not necessary for applicants to understand or speak Arabic.
The workshop is led by Moustafa Hassan, a master calligrapher and artist from Egypt and is taught in English with some key terms explained in Arabic. The session includes a brief overview of the development of Arabic script, training in the basics of drawing circles and curves and creating sharp endings on letters with plenty of hands-on practice and feedback on individual progress.
Writing implements (pen, paper, ink) will be provided to students at a cost of £5, payable directly to the teacher at the start of the session. Students will learn how to prepare their own reed pen.
By enrolling on a course at SOAS Language Centre, you are bound by its Terms and Conditions.
