Monday 14th- Saturday 26th August 2017

Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays - 18:00-20:00
Saturdays 10:00-15:00 (including a 1-hour lunch break)


Detailed Description

The aim of Chinese Beginners 2 semi-intensive course is to provide opportunities for students to participate in various interactive activities and role plays to practice key language points. The emphasis is on all four key skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and students are expected to undertake homework and consolidation exercises between sessions.

By the end of the course, students should be familiar with using the language to deal with some simple but effective tasks in daily life. The topics for this course include making appointments, asking for directions and places, describing one’s health, talking about talents, abilities and leisure activities.


The course is taught in Chinese and English. Class size is limited to fifteen to allow for close intensive interactive practice.

Week 1:

Monday 14 August (18:00-20:00)

  • Making phone calls
  • Saying ‘you have the wrong number’
  • The use of ‘le’
  • Asking if someone is in

 Wednesday 16 August (18:00-20:00)

  • Leaving a message
  • Asking one’s telephone number
  • Saying ‘to send an email and text messages’
  • Words of communication devices

Thursday 17 August (18:00-20:00)

  • The words of directions
  • Names of places
  • Telling how to get a place
  • Taking a taxi

Saturday 19 August (10:00 – 15:00 with 1 hour of lunch break)

Morning session:

  • Introducing Means of transport
  • Talking about distance
  • The use of ‘zhe’
  • Reading street signs

Afternoon session:

  • The words of locations
  • Talking about where an object is
  • Looking for a lost item
  • Saying you’ve got it

Week 2

Monday 21 August (18:00 – 20:00)

  • Describing the surrounding areas of one’s home
  • Locating a place of one’s interest
  • Reading signs on buildings
  • Chinese culture about seats on the dinner table

Wednesday 23 August (18:00-20:00)

  • Talking about body parts
  • Saying one’s illness
  • Getting advice from a doctor
  • Expressing likes and dislikes

Thursday 24 August (18:00 – 20:00)

  • Asking for leave
  • Writing a note about illness
  • Talking about reasons
  • Reading signs on hospitals and pharmacies

Saturday 26 August  (10:00-15:00, with one hour of lunch break)

Morning session:

  • Talking about one’s abilities
  • Using ‘hui’, ‘neng’
  • Commenting one’s work
  • The use of ‘de’

Afternoon session:

  • Talking about one’s leisure activities
  • The words of frequency
  • Names of entertaining places
  • Tips for further study
