Lizzie Ogle is percussionist, vocalist and rabequeira (Brazilian folk fiddle) whose music combines her deep love for the natural world with in-depth research into rhythm and song. Born and raised in Scotland, she found her way into the worlds of Brazilian percussion in her early teens. For the last 15 years Lizzie has deepened this knowledge through living, working, researching and collaborating between Brazil and the UK. She holds a PhD in ethnomusicology which explored sacred and ancestral Afro-Brazilian rhythms of Pernambuco, and has since taught in the music department at SOAS. Lizzie currently composes and arranges for percussion and vocal collective Baque Luar, performing extensively across the UK and producing their debut album ‘Brilha’. She also works with Let Drum Beat, exploring Brazilian and Afro-Brazilian percussion, original composition and the boundaries between tradition and innovation. Lizzie runs embodied percussion and voice-work courses, as well as the ‘Pandeiro Song Club’ in Brighton where she lives, exploring the potential of this powerful little instrument to dive into the wellspring of traditional and contemporary Brazilian rhythms.
