DescriptionSCS Lunchtime Listens Tuesday 29 October, 2024 1-2pm SOAS Gallery, Lower ground floor Supported by SOAS University Library For our very first Lunchtime Listen, the SOAS Concert Series presents renowned composer and performer Wu Fei, inside the SOAS Gallery, during the upcoming Strange Wonders: Jizi and pioneers of contemporary ink from China exhibition. Wu Fei's solo guzheng/vocal suite “Moon Hunter” draws on the singing form of ancient Chinese poetry. Fei’s original work and improvisations will be woven together with traditional guzheng repertoire, folk songs, and Chinese opera, taking inspiration and influence from the old to create the new. Her performances will be accompanied by descriptions by Wu Fei, that introduce the history of the guzheng beginning more than 2,500 years ago, the regional linguistic character of different singing styles of the Chinese operas, and Fei's own explorative improvisations and experiences of cross-cultural collaborations around the globe.
