One-day calligraphy workshop
Saturday 19th August 11:00-16:00 (incl. 1-hour lunch break)
This summer the Language Centre is offering a Saturday workshop introducing the Naskh style of Calligraphy.
The Naskh style is the most popular Arabic calligraphic style and is commonly used for printing in Arabic.
Although applicants should have some familiarity with the Arabic alphabet, they do not need to understand or speak Arabic.
The workshop is led by Moustafa Hassan, a master calligrapher and artist from Egypt who teaches the workshop in English with some key terms explained in Arabic. He will guide attendees through each step of the process, from selecting the right materials to mastering the techniques. He will also explain the different tools and materials used in the art form, as well as provide a basic overview of the language and script of Arabic.
The session on Arabic script is designed to be an engaging and educational experience. Participants will be taken on a journey through the evolution of the script, beginning with an overview of its development and evolution. From there, they will be trained in the basics of drawing circles and curves, as well as learning how to create sharp endings on letters. Throughout the session there will be plenty of opportunities for hands-on practice, as well as feedback on individual progress.
Materials:
Writing implements (pen, paper, ink) will be provided to students at a cost of £5, payable directly to the teacher at the start of the session. Students will learn how to prepare their own reed pen.
Places are limited and early enrolment is advised. Deadline 31 July.
Organiser: This event is hosted by SOAS Language Centre.
